About the USS Oklahoma Memorial – Pearl Harbor

The USS Oklahoma Memorial, located at Ford Island is dedicated to honor the 429 sailors and marines who lost their lives aboard the USS Oklahoma during the Japanese surprise attack over Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941 by Japanese torpedoes In 2006, President Bush officially signed the memorial into law as a national Memorial under the National Park Service. The memorial was dedicated Dec. 7, 2007, 66 years after the attack.

The USS Oklahoma lost 429 men – second only to the 1,777 casualty aboard the USS Arizona. Unlike the USS Arizona, the USS Oklahoma was pulled from the water in November 1943 and the sailors and marines bodies were recovered and buried. The battleship was sold as scrap metal and in its tow to Oakland, California it sank at sea about 500 miles north of State of Hawaii.

As you disembark the shuttle bus to the USS Missouri, you will see the solemn memorial. You can take pictures as you may tribute to the 429 serviceman that lost their live the tragical December 7, 1941.

The monument design consits of 429 white marble columns symbolizing a serviceman in pristine white dress uniform. Each of marble is 7 feet tall and weighs 120 pounds honors the heroes that gave their ultimate sacrifice. The memorial’s black granite walls suggest the once grandiose hull of the Oklahoma.
